It is getting ridiculously hard to find an activity we all like and ice cream we haven't eaten. It took almost a week to figure this out but we eventually found something to do this weekend that every agreed to (or at least didn't refuse to do).
We started out with a trip to Lyman Orchards. A locally famous place that has been around since 1700s. First order of business was to check out the corn maze. Lyman's has been doing a maze for a long time and each year they come with a new design. This year was a maze dedicated to UCONN's women basketball.
The maze turned out to be a bit of a snooze, much smaller than we anticipated. We walked less than a mile to complete the whole thing in what seemed like less than 20 minutes.
After a break at the Lyman Orchard store, where they had excellent cinnamon apple donuts, we headed to the orchard for some apple picking.
We got our fill of apples and pears while we walked around the orchard and then bought a few pounds to take home with us.
We loaded back in the car and headed to Blue Back Square in West Hartford for shopping and dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. Blue Back is a revitalized area of West Hartford with plenty of shopping and foods options. After we all hit Borders books we split up, the girls went to Crate & Barrel and then a toy store while Jon, Jake and I headed to REI to check out ski equipment. Unfortunately Sept 5th was too early for ski gear to be out so we settled for checking out ski clothing only. I have a bit of a jacket fetish and found several that i wanted to take home, each totally justified in my mind. We met the girls back on the street and went into to Cheesecake Factory to stuff ourselves. Everybody enjoyed it and we ate way too much. We had already picked out an ice cream shop on the way home so most of us skipped dessert but Megan and Alyssa couldn't resist and each got something to go with the intention of eating it while we had ice cream.
We took advantage of being upstate and decided to visit one of CT Magazine's top 10 ice cream shops in the Hartford area, Mortensen's Ice Cream in Newington CT. After reading the review and an editorial where the owner was upset with CT Mag's review we thought we were in for a fantastic treat but it turned out to be just pretty good. I had a Sundae with Brazilian Coffee ice cream, Alyssa bailed on her Cheesecake Factory dessert and ordered Cake Batter Ice Cream. Lorri got Heath Bar Crunch and i forget what everyone else had. I'm pretty sure somebody had the Boston Blackout (chocolate ice cream with brownies)
After stuffing our faces for the 2nd time we piled in the Acadia and headed home.
